Historical Notes

Seth - Sociedade de Empreitadas e Trabalhos Hidráulicos was set up in 1933 by the Danish firm Højgaard & Schultz a/s. It is now one of Portugal’s major Marine Works companies and it has gained international renown in Coastal and Port Engineering.

Throughout its 75 years of history the Company has undertaken countless civil construction, industrial and public works jobs for central and local government, autonomous institutes, the Portuguese Armed Forces, the US Armed Forces and NATO.

Seth soon became a technologically-advanced company and, in 1947, it was awarded the contract for the construction of the Marechal Carmona Bridge over the River Tagus at Vila Franca de Xira.

In 1949, Seth built the Pego do Altar Dam (Santa Catarina River, Setúbal) where, for the first time, the upstream face was protected by a curtain of stainless-steel plates provided with elastic joints.

In 1949 the Company built the Vale do Gaio Dam (Xarrama River, near Alcácer do Sal); in this job, one of the technological innovations of the times was the application of an inner curtain of bituminous matter between the earth massif and the rockfill.

In 1954, the Company also built the Vala Nova Bridge at Benavente, the first bridge to be built in Portugal using pre-stressed concrete.

More recently, in 1990, Seth was involved in the Douro River Navigability Project, especially along the Valeira stretch.

In 2003, Seth was a member of the consortium awarded the contract for the construction of the Natural Gas Pipeline between Sines and Setúbal. The work involved the construction of a pipeline over a distance of 87 kilometres, including the crossing of the River Sado, considered to be Europe’s longest crossing involving the use of horizontal directional boring.

This is an all-time image of the Company, innovation in the search for solutions in carrying out the customers’ projects. This form of action was to constitute the basis of the Company’s internationalisation as from 2004, which now extends to countries such as Algeria, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Angola.

In January 2008 Seth took its first step in establishing an important landmark in its history: the construction of its own head-office. For the first time in 75 years Seth is to have its own headquarters building. It is currently under construction at Queijas, in the municipality or Oeiras, as a result of the Company’s growth in recent years and of the strategic outlook defined by the Board for the coming years.
